Bij auxiliaries (hulpwerkwoorden) is het belangrijk om te beseffen dat deze in het Nederlands vaak erg verschillende betekenissen kunnen hebben. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan het woord ‘willen.’ Soms betekent dit ‘moeten’ (Ik wil dat je nu je kamer opruimt!) en soms betekent het ‘niet erg vinden’ (Ik wil je best even helpen.).
In het Engels betekent dat soms dat je een ander hulpwerkwoord moet gebruiken, terwijl je in het Nederlands twee keer hetzelfde woord zou gebruiken (I want you to clean your room! versus I don’t mind helping you).

good, better - Het zegt iets over ‘looks’, een zintuiglijk werkwoord. Daarom gebruik je de adjective (zie de uitzonderingen in je grammatica boek). Als overtreffende trap wordt dat dan ‘better’ en niet ‘gooder’.
more slowly - Het woord zegt iets over ‘driving’, een werkwoord. Slowly is dus de juiste vorm. Om hier een overtreffende trap van te maken voeg je ‘more’ toe, aangezien ‘slowly’ meer dan 1 lettergreep heeft.
Toelichting:
Bij bijvoeglijke naamwoorden (adjectives) en bijwoorden (adverbs) is eigenlijk maar 1 regel belangrijk. Zegt het woord iets over een zelfstandig naamwoord? Dan is het een adjective (The ugly fox.).
Zegt het iets over een werkwoord, bijvoeglijk naamwoord, ander bijwoord of over een hele zin? Dan gebruik je een bijwoord (The very boring lesson. Finally, it was over.) Dat betekent dus dat je altijd een adverb gebruikt, behalve als het gaat over een zelfstandig naamwoord. De basisregel over hoe adjectives er uit zien en hoe je er adverbs van maakt, is ook niet zo moeilijk: Om van een adjective een adverb te maken voeg je -ly toe (beautiful - beautifully, slow - slowly). Let op: Hier zijn wel uitzonderingen op en deze zul je uit je hoofd moeten leren (bekijk je reference book, p. 65-67).
Met deze bijvoeglijke naamwoorden en bijwoorden kan je ook dingen vergelijken. Bijvoorbeeld: This car is fast, but the other one is even faster. De basisregel is dat korte woorden -er en -est achter de stam krijgen (fast, faster, fastest) en langere woorden (2 of meer lettergrepen) krijgen more en most voor de stam (more important, most important). Let op: Bekijk ook hier je reference book voor de uitzonderingen (p. 68-69).
